Being the UK’s oldest theme park, hitting a fantastic 175 years old this 2018, Blackgang Chine is one of the Island’s most popular attractions even today. The family favourite has something to offer for everyone, from amusement rides through to fairytale lands and even a dinosaur walk. In this week’s blog, we take a look at some of the reasons that 175 years later, Blackgang Chine is still standing strong.

It’s rich in history
Operating for a lengthy 175 years and taking it’s position as the UK’s oldest theme park, Blackgang Chine’s history is quite an achievement! The park was founded by Alexander Dabell in 1843 whilst just a chine and the 500 foot gorge in the cliff face. Drawing Victorian’s from far and wide to experience the breathtaking views, there was an initial ‘attraction’ on the site – in the skeleton of a whale which had been washed up onto the beach, and is still on display at the park today. Still owned and run by Dabell’s descendants, the park has grown over the years and now has an eclectic mix of attractions, themed worlds and exciting rides. Blackgang Chine may be rich in history, but it’s certainly not stuck in the past. With a variety of attractions and investment across the years, including a new Restricted 5 area created around the Isle of Wight’s dinosaur heritage, there’s plenty of new things to see and do on each visit.

There’s always something going on
Alongside their traditional attractions and offerings, Blackgang Chine is home to many wonderful, seasonal events which take place throughout the year – perfect for the whole family to get involved in. Coming up in the next few months is a wonderful 175th birthday celebration called The Curious Timeboat, Buffalo Creek’s Wild West Week and Blackgang’s big birthday bash in August. It’s good to check on the events section of their website to find out more about the latest events taking place in the park.

It’s a place of magic and wonder
Blackgang Chine has six magical theme worlds for families to enjoy; from the dinosaur filled Restricted Area 5 through to the Wild Wild West in Buffalo Creek and a fantastic fairytale land, there truly is something for every member of the family to enjoy at the theme park. On one day a the park, children and adults alike can explore an underwater kingdom, a pirate cove and nursery land to name just a few!
